Vietnam to host biggest int'l gong culture festival

HANOI, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam will organize an international gong culture festival, the biggest of its kind, next March with the expected participation of artists from its regions and five regional countries, according to a local culture agency on Thursday.

The festival, to be held in the central highlands province of Gia Lai, will attract gong artists from Vietnamese localities, mostly central highland provinces, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, China and Japan, said the Vietnam Institute of Culture and Arts under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

On the sidelines of the festival, an international workshop about preserving the gong culture in Vietnam's central highlands region, and a photo exhibition will he held.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2005 recognized Vietnam's gong culture as a masterpiece of oral and intangible heritage of humanity.

Gong, mainly made from an alloy of copper, zinc and lead, is an integral part of ethnic minority cultures in the five central highlands provinces of Lam Dong, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dac Lac and Dac Nong. Acting as a main ceremonial instrument, it is present in all the rituals of community life.
