Pharaoh Khufu's boat unveiled to public

BEIJING, July 22 -- Visitors to Egypt's famous Pyramids now can see the inside of a Pharaoh's ship. The ship is believed to have belonged to Khufu, the builder of the Gizeh mausoleum known today as "the Great Pyramid." And this is the first time the boat has been on public display.

The 4500-year old ship was discovered by Egyptian archaeologists in 1954. The vessel was in extremely poor condition. It was kept away from public view as one means of preserving the wreck for Posterity.

Now, Japanese technicians have installed cameras that project images of the vessel's interior on a television screen. There was a demonstration for the media, Saturday.

Hawwas says the project is undertaken in cooperation with the University of Waseda in Japan. The next step is to begin restoring the boat. The Japanese university will assist in that part of the work as well.

Tourists are still able to visit the nearby solar boat. It was discovered in the same area and is in much better condition.
